![]() | Everyone is now familiar with having the internet at home. Most people though are still used to having one computer in the house with an internet connection - much like in the 1960s people couldn't imagine having more than one television set. Also the prospect of having a permanent internet connection in the same way as you have an electricity supply is only just becoming a reality, but there will be a day when a home without an internet connection will be viewed like a home without electricity. The connection won't just be there for when you decide to sit at a computer and surf through home pages, but will be permanently delivering a stream of information into and out of your home. Internet banking is now a reality, as is internet shopping, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. You've probably heard about the refridgerator and toaster that can connect to the net - and laughed at the idea - but you won't be looking at porn sites while making toast in the morning - rather your toaster will keep tabs on how much toast you make, and will liase with your 'fridge and other appliances, and will order more bread to be delivered or collected before you run out. Your fridge will also tell you when food is reaching its use-by date.... no more lumps of green mould living at the back of the bottom shelf.... Your internet connection will also be able to control your homes' environment - increasing the heat when you're on your way home, start cooking the dinner when you want it to, removing moisture from the air before it gets damp outside, even pre-heating your car engine when you get up in the morning. Everything we do every day which takes time will soon be controllable by the internet - it will be a complete remote control for your home. Now if only it could be made to dust...... |
